A recent study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research showed that testosterone is inversely correlated to the major factors that lead to a host of complications that limit and lower quality of life, leading to less mobility and longevity, and a higher risk of death.

The researchers out of the Medical Hospital of Norway found that the Lowest Levels of Total Testosterone and Free Testosterone are found in men with pronounced abdominal obesity. They also revealed a link between Low Testosterone and High Systolic Blood Pressure, and that Total and Free Testosterone was inversely related to risk of hypertension. Subjects with diabetes also showed diminished testosterone levels, even without a prior history.

The researchers also discovered strong associations between low testosterone and several different components of metabolic syndrome. They then concluded that testosterone plays a significant protectionist role in the development of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

One of the biggest things you can to make sure you keep your testosterone levels at optimum levels, helping you keep lean muscle, and speed up your metabolism is keep your waist line under control. They found that Free Testosterone (what is available for your body to use) had a direct inverse relationship with waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI).

Subjects with a WC over 40 inches (102 centimeters) had significantly lower testosterone levels. Even after adjustments for BMI a measure of overall fatness. The lowest quartile of testosterone levels, were all in the highest quartile of WC, BMI, and Conicity Index (index of central obesity).

It is unclear whether the obesity causes low testosterone or if low testosterone causes obesity, but we do know having high testosterone is guaranteed to keep fat off of your midsection.

To help boost your testosterone there are three steps that will increase testosterone levels synergenically, or individually. It is recommended that you implement at least two of the following recommendations.

1.) Increase Low Testosterone with High Intensity Exercise. All strength training exercises help boost testosterone, but the ones that are most effective are compound exercises recruiting multiple muscle groups. These include but are not limited to, Overhead Presses, Squat Variations, Dead-Lifts, Pull-Ups, and other Olympic Style Lifts.

Interval training has also been shown to increase testosterone levels over 350% more than steady paced cardio (i.e. jogging, cycling, spinning, etc). You need to go at a 9/10 intensity, then recover at a 3/10 intensity.

2.) Increasing your testosterone through a scientifically proven diet. It has been clinically shown that diets high in fat (40% intake of calories), low to moderate intake of carbohydrates coming mainly from vegetables and other low GI foods (20-35% intake of calories), and moderate consumption of proteins, coming mainly from animal sources (20-30% intake of calories).

3.) Hormone Replacement therapy may be right for you, if the above two recommendations do not increase your testosterone to optimum levels. If you are interested in HRT, you should contact a certified anti-aging doctor in your area.

So, make sure you boost your testosterone to avoid a whole host of health risks, as well as mitigate any damage you may be currently experiencing.

Remember Aging is Inevitable, But Looking and Feeling Old is Optional

Another classic myth…

“Adding one pound of muscle will burn 50 calories each day.”

When we apply some basic math skills to this myth we find that it is completely illogical, and impossible. Let’s just say someone added 20 lbs of muscle, if this myth were true they would burn an extra 1000 calories (20lbs x 50 calories). We know that there is no way that our metabolism is going be able to sustain muscle mass if we were burning that many calories on top of our other metabolic functions.

Take a look at any college level anatomy and physiology textbook. It will show us that nearly 70% of our total energy expenditures are due to organ processes.

Most of the time there are nice little charts that break it down even further for you.

20% of our energy is used by the Brain

25% of our energy is used by the Liver

18% of our energy expenditure is from muscle

Therefore, your resting metabolic rate is only made up of around 20% consumption by your muscle cells.

In general we can ball park that an average person is around 40% muscle. So in a 215 pound guy would have 86 pounds of muscle.

If every pound of muscle burned 50 calories…

His metabolic rate would be projected at 4,300 calories just for the muscles cells! But, according to our textbooks above that is only around 15-20% of his total metabolic rate expenditure.

So his total metabolic rate would be over 20,000 calories if this well spread myth that a pound of muscle burned 50 calories each day.

So don’t be fooled: Simply increasing your muscle by a pound will not automatically increase your metabolic rate by 50 calories.

Like the catabolic food claim, this sounds great when we are talking about 1 pound of muscle, or 1 apple having the effect, but when we crunch the figures…it’s becomes apparent that it cannot be true.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that building muscle is useless. In fact, it’s essential for health, longevity and looking good, but I’ve seen way too many people justify eating(and drinking) extra calories because of their gains in muscle (and hypothetical gain in metabolism).

It’s no surprise that most of the contestants on TV’s “The Biggest Loser” regain the weight once they’re off the show. To maintain their new weight, they’d have to sustain the show’s extreme lifestyle, which is completely impossible.

The same is true of extreme programs that require tremendous amounts of workouts every week. These are mainly found on infomercials, and come in a complete DVD set with 60-90 minute workouts planned for each day. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have that kind of time to train everyday, and I don’t know anyone else who does either.

So what’s a better way to lose fat, and keep it off? Take baby steps.

Dr. James Hill, from the Center of Human Nutrition in Denver, Colorado, is famous for the research studies which found that folks who eat breakfast are better able to keep off lost weight. He now claims that “small reductions in conscious energy intake and increases in physical activity can reduce excessive fat gain.”

Listen, you didn’t gain all that weight overnight. You’re not going to lose it overnight. So focus on making small changes everyday, and the simplest changes to make are in your diet.

This weekend, take 30 minutes to plan your shopping list and meals for the following week. Then go to the grocery store, come home, and prepare as many of those meals as possible.

Cook a bunch of chicken breasts at once. Wash and cut up fresh vegetables to have on hand for snacks and to prepare filling side dishes. Every day next week, take a baby step and eat one additional serving of fruits or vegetables.

Make those small diet changes and ease your way into a workout program. By doing this consistently, just imagine how healthy and lean you can become. You will wake up months from now, and wonder why all your pants are way too lose, without even trying.

Don’t wait, you can get started today with your Free Nutrition bonus and It’s Not Your Fault You’re Fat Guidelines

To Increasing your Quality of Life,

JT

I hope you aren’t falling for these fitness myths, but I heard a few fat loss doozies on the radio this morning. So I decided to set the record strait, so you can stop chasing these pink unicorns and truly make progress to recapturing your youthful energy levels and physique.

Most of the time, this folklore comes from wishful thinking that maybe I can just think happy thoughts and reset my metabolic clock, and lose fat without trying. The ones the radio hosts were talking about was squeezing lemon juice in to super ice cold water. I mean how in the world is cold water going to speed up fat loss over warm water? Or a tiny amount of lemon juice? People believe these misconceptions because they want to hold on to the dream, that if they just drink cold sour water, they can eat all the French fries they want. And really, who wouldn’t want to believe that.

Which is why it is so easy to spread them around to coworkers and family members. And is the same reason they make great sound bites for journalists who have no biological IQ. It is in fact the media’s job to make people feel better and give them hope (even if it is completely unfounded, who cares about truth, when it comes to getting more views, and spreading propaganda).

But, what really makes me made is when trainers and coaches believe these myths (one of the main reason HS sports are really dangerous). Then are perfectly intent filling the heads of their clients or brainwashing a whole new generation of youth with these same lies, and supplement company propaganda.

Here’s some junk that I read recently in another trainer’s (who happens to also be a HS Strength Coach) newsletter.”Catabolic foods burn more calories than they supply. An example of this would be a medium sized apple (which is catabolic), which provides around 85 calories; however your metabolism would burn 99 calories to digesting it. To help maintain your weight it is helpful to eat a minimum of ten servings of catabolic foods each day. “

Okay, so as long as my math teacher didn’t lie to me too… if I eat 10 apples per day, I would actually have a net loss of 140 calories? Someone better tell all of the sports nutritionists about this before they recommend an apple as a good post-exercise carbohydrate source. If I were to apply this “catabolic food” (mis)logic, I would starve to death if all I had to eat was apples or other “catabolic foods”.

Now don’t get me wrong, these coaches and trainers are suggesting the right foods (fruits and vegetables), but calling any food “catabolic foods” or “negative calorie” is just simply wrong.

But, it does sound “exciting” and probably sells more books.

We will cover another Myth tomorrow. Until then remember Aging is Inevitable, but “ooking and Feeling Old is Optional.

Did you know that over 25% of Americans are on a “Diet”, yet most of them stop seeing results after a few weeks, get discouraged, and stop?

Many people have complained and said diets don’t work because “I dieted for weeks and weeks turned into a month, then all of a sudden I wasn’t losing weight anymore, my metabolism must have just shut down because I actually began gaining fat while dieting. Then I said forget this, if I’m going to get fatter, it might as well be on food I love, and when I went back to eating pizza and burgers I actually LOST weight!”

Have you ever wondered why you diet often stops working? It is quite common in people who follow very strict (and sometimes weird) diets. And it perpetuated the myth that diets cause ‘metabolic damage’. So everyone jumps on the “fix your metabolism” bandwagon, treating your metabolism like it’s a material thing that can be broken or fixed (like replacement car parts).

We know that this is impossible because of the immense amount scientific research that proves weight training while dieting preserves metabolic rate. The reason this happens is because of our “Life Hormones” testosterone and growth hormone.

When a person is on a very restrictive diet, restricting say carbohydrates, the body shuts down its natural testosterone production, but when someone adds in intense weight training, the testosterone levels increase offsetting the negative effects of the carbohydrate restriction.

A similar thing happens when a person restricts fat intake. Low amounts of dietary fat reduce testosterone production. The lower the fat intake level, the lower your testosterone production is going to be. Again, weight training will help offset this drop in testosterone production so your metabolism isn’t going to be “damaged”.

Protein restrictive diets decrease Growth Hormone production, but a diet with excessive protein decreases testosterone levels. So you have to be careful on protein intake, as overdoing it may increase hGH, but it will negatively effect testosterone.

The main reason people stop losing weight on restrictive diets is an imbalance in their “Life Hormone” production, and their weight training is not being done at high enough intensity to offset the decrease in their hormone production. When foods (nutrients) are reintroduced into the diets, we find an increase in “Life Hormones” and thus a burst in the decreased fat deparment.

So, remember to continue to lose weight you need to 1.) do intense strength training 2.) vary your dietary intake enough no to disrupt your hormone levels.

You can stop hormone imbalance, and increase low testosterone levels.

Everyday I see these online ads for a magic berry, said to have helped this or that celebrity lose tens if not hundreds of pounds. Which, is why I stick to my claim that It’s Not Your Fault You’re Getting Fat.

These lies weaved into extremely well written sales copy prey on our desire to look and feel younger. They poke and prod us into believing that we can make our hopes and dreams come true if we just take a pill, or eat a berry.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, I really do. But, there isn’t a pill, a shot, a supplement, and no, not even a berry, that can help you lose fat, build muscle, increase low testosterone, nor get your dream body.

But, I will tell you what does. Desire, Commitment, and Action.

First you must have a good reason to lose weight. For some people it is wanting to look good at their daughters wedding. For others it is a close call with one of the many Diseases of Aging, others it is to pick up more better looking guys/gals after a rough divorce. Whatever your reason it must be something that you only want It must be something you desire enough to go for.

This leads us to the next step Commitment. Like I said you cannot just casually want to look and feel younger. Everyone does. It is very similar to wanting to be a millionaire. The ones who achieve their goal is the one who desires it so much they are willing to make it a reality.

Then action. You must act. Don’t wait, procrastination is one of the many reason’s people get lulled into weight gain, loss of muscle, health problems, and a decreasing quality of life.

Remember Aging is inevitable, But looking and Feeling Old is Optional,

I wanted to take the time to answer some pressing questions sent in by readers this weekend…

Q:I need to be in my best shape for August 5th. What is the best interval program I can follow to lose the last bit of fat before then using only machines?

Answer:
Not a big deal, for the next 6 weeks here is what you want to do.

First, you want to alternate between 2 different interval workouts; 1 and 2. If you train intervals 3 times per week, your schedule will look like this:

Week 1: 1, 2, 1

Week 2: 2, 1, 2

(Note: Make Sure you do each interval workout on a different day…do not do them both on the same day.)

For workout 1 on the treadmill:

Warm-up for 5 minutes.

Run 60seconds (9/10 intensity).

Walk 60seconds (2/10 intensity).

Repeat for6-8 intervals.

For Workout B on the bike:

Warm-up for 5 minutes.

Work for30 seconds (9/10 intensity).

Rest for60 seconds (2/10 intensity).

Repeat fora total of 6 intervals.

Q: If I have knee issues and have been told that people with bad knees should avoid stationary lunges, and squats?

Answer:

I Think you would do best to start with floor-based lower-body exercises such as Lying Leg Extensions and stability ball leg curls (you can find those in the beginner body weight workouts) prior to using standing lower body exercises.

Build up the strength of your glutes and hamstrings and then you should proceed to wall squats with the ball (the ball is placed between your back and the wall). If you don’t experience any pain, you can move on to regular squatting. From there, move on to low step-ups, then higher step-ups, and then to split squats, and then onto lunges.

This will strengthen the muscles that stabilize your knee and this should minimize any knee pain. After having several knee surgery through my wrestling career, I have found that these body weight exercises are the best way to strength your legs without undo stress on your knees. After a while you should be able to move into Dumbbell Squatting and lunging exercises.

It also helps if you lose excess body fat to reduce the overall stress on your knee joints.

Question: What kind of diet do you recommend and how do you determine what to prescribe to a given client?

Answer:
The most important thing in your eating habits is to control your blood sugar levels, which will help promote healthy hormone balance.

For Optimum Hormone Health you need a diet high in fat(around 35-40%) moderate in protein (.75-1.5 grams/pound of body weight), and low in carbs coming mainly from vegetables. But the reality is, I would never restrict fruits and vegetables, so eat as many of those as you like.

The average person emails me and is typically eating 2 meals a day and about 35gof protein (without breakfast). People want me to cut their calories? And add intense workouts? Not Possible.

I recommend that these people eat 4-5 meals per day from a list of”approved” foods (ie proteins, vegetables, healthy fats) and try to hit a higher protein intake. The eating plans then build themself without having to focus on numbers. Calorie control is important, but it’s rarely an issue with beginners, as most need to get out of the Low Fat-high carb mindset.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

To Increasing Your Quality of Life,

Joshua Taylor

PS – If you haven’t picked up your copy of your Complete Anti-Aging Fitness Program, make sure you do that this weekend. Take back control of your life, increase testosterone and growth hormone, boost energy, and look and feel younger.

I was training this morning and a woman came into the gym after finishing her daily run. She then proceeded to grab some light dumbbells and did seated triceps kickbacks.

This is the first time I have seen this technique, and if you picture it, you’ll see why she was setting herself up for no improvement before she even started.

Try doing this:

Sit as if you are holding dumbbells, with your arms hanging by your sides. Now lean about 30 degrees forward. Swing your hands forward like you would for a dumbbell curl, then extend them as far back as you can like you were doing a kickback.

Take a peek at where your hands finish the movement, and how high they have traveled. Now remember that resistance is only applied when dumbbells are moving against gravity, not when they move parallel to the floor.

This would mean that this woman has worked her muscles for around two inches, very ineffective. Even if she would do kickbacks properly, she would still be doing a very ineffective exercise.

I do not really know why, but I see a lot more women doing kickbacks than I men. And they tend to be using a very low weight doing tremendously high amounts of reps. But, men and women should not limit their workouts with such an inefficient movement. Especially, not when you can do a total body fat burning and strength building exercise like close grip pushups, that hit your triceps more effectively than any dumbbell exercise.

One of my favorite clients, (I told Erika I wouldn’t mention her by name, oops, Sorry) has without exception, the best arms in the gym. She can do nearly 20 full regular pushups. And she never once did triceps kickbacks.

Make sure you pick exercises that will help increase testosterone and growth hormone, and your body will change in less time than ever, burning more fat, building lean sexy muscle, and helping you take back control of your life.

Remember Aging is Inevitable, but Looking and Feeling Old is Optional,

There sure is a lot of misinformation on testosterone, growth hormone, and your health that often contradicts other information out there. But, how do we sort it all out? I certainly cannot blame people for wanting simple answers that everyone can agree on.

But, tell me one area where “experts” consistently do agree and can give you the same answers on every subject?

Economics – Ha…Not a chance, Socialist government controlled policy, or free market, Adam Smith vs. Stalin. Market is at the bottom, we aren’t quite near the bottom.

Investing in Real Estate- Notta. Buy foreclosures. No, buy empty condos. No, just rent prices are still going to fall even further before they recover.
Financial Markets – don’t think so. It’s a Bear, No Wait, a Bull. Nuts, it’s a bear that looks like a dog. Ditch the in stocks. No, buy stocks we are at the bottom. No, stick it under your mattress – the bankers are scoundrels!

Health Care – Government controlled vs. Private Sector. Preventive vs. The Pharmaceutical symptom fighting antibiotics.

Education?

Movies?

Religion?

Arithmetic? – Yes! Finally, well no. There are pantheist out there that says everything is the same, so 1+1 would equal 1…how confusing is that…

Do I have a point or am I just ranting?

Well just that testosterone, growth hormone, fitness and nutrition recommendations are like any other set of advice from any area of study. Some advice is based on scientifically proven facts and others are biased interpretations (mainly because of major donors) of those same facts.

Often the experts will be right, and often the will be wrong. But if they are honest, and leave their bias out of the advice they give and base their opinion on the scientific research, physiology and on the individual’s physical traits, then the expert will be right more often than wrong.

Remember the Goal is to Help increase the Quality of Your Life. When you receive information think critically on it, just as you would in any aspect of life. Don’t be fooled by exceptional marketing, trust the facts, and those you trust.
